Graduate Assistants at Private Institutions Are Now Officially “Employees”

Due to a 2004 National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) ruling, graduate assistants working in private institutions were denied collective bargaining rights because they were not considered employees. Well, the NLRB has moved to reverse that decision [Chronicle of Higher Education], paving the way for teaching assistants at NYU [New York Times] to begin to organize.

This is good news, not only only for the NYU graduate assistants but also to assistants here in Illinois, particularly at Northwestern who have been trying to organize (despite being at a private institution) as well.
